The world is approaching an era of holistic awareness and ecological living. Our future living is likely to be as different to our old way of living as the motor car is to the horse and cart, and our community processes are likely to reflect that.

We can dream and envision future community living that can be practical, even if we don't know at present how it will be achieved. The dream is important. We need the steps to lead to this goal - not into a corner.

OUR AWARE FUTURE
The Concept of the Aware Community

Abstract

This book discusses the concept of awareness and its importance to the world, community, the individual and future life. Holistic, or whole, awareness allows us to achieve success in our endeavours. For example, if a mechanic has not got a holistic awareness of how the motor car works, then the mechanic cannot fix the car. Indigenous humans had a holistic awareness of life and had successful, sustainable living. However, we lost that holistic awareness when we invented agriculture and money and started forming into towns and cities. As the world is now developing a whole awareness of the world and its activities, then we can and will again have successful and sustainable living. The world will enter a so called "golden age".

The second half of the book discusses what it means to change society and the systems that we live in. It identifies a new way of defining the systems of community : education, politics, law, economics, and social systems, and their relationship to the environment. It defines how these systems can be structured in relation to each other so that they function successfully to form an aware and manageable community. Large amounts of the activity of the local community will be within a large neighbourhood.

THE LIVING SYSTEM
Modelling Human Communities on Plant and Animal Communities

Abstract

In ecology we can find a model for successful living. Plants and animals form into communities and we can use those characteristics to design successful human communities. This book describes the direct modelling of human communities from plant and animal communities. Plant and animal ecology forms a successful living system for its inhabitants. These characteristics are concerned with the uniting of all the processes with definite structural connections, and the definite horizontal spacing and vertical structural layering of the plant and animal community. These structural characteristics allow the community to function appropriately. The energy and materials flow and cycle in definite ways. Associations of plants and animals with specific species form in support of one another, aiding each other in their growth and development. Diversity helps the stability of the community. And the invasion of the community from outside organisms has profound influences. All these characteristics change during the growth and development of the community.

All these principles can be adapted to the development of human communities. Ecology books become a textbook for how to design human communities. Virtually to the extent that we can cross out plant and animal community words and substitute human community words as shown in this book. While it will be useful to write an ecology book with chapters that relate to familiar human community subjects such as economics, law, politics, and education, this book has chosen to have chapter topics that are ecological in nature. This can introduce the modern human community to subjects that are important for its transition to ecology.

Permaculture principles for plant and animal communities can also be used as models for human communities and some parts of the book describe some applications. The illustration below is from the book.
