THE AWARE SOCIETY   page 3

Now, what I have done here is redefine the systems of living. So we have the education system whereby we get the knowledge, the political system whereby we use the knowledge to plan and regulate the economic system, how we get the things to do what we do, the social system, in what we live in, the environment.

These definitions are simple and easy to understand. They all relate to each other. Too many of the modern definitions don't relate to each other and are complex and difficult to understand. But these new definitions are holistic definitions. They encompass all the activities of society and the natural ecological life support system. The terms are also a bit of an exploration. For the economic systems definition of "how we get the things" may be substituted by the closer to the modern idea of "how we produce and distribute".

What we have just done is identify the processes of society which our activities can be carried out in. But that does not explain what to do with them all. So what we are going to do now is to give structure to all these systems. We have identified various components such as machines and tennis courts, and component activities such as furniture making and golf, but we have not identified how or where these activities would be carried out.

The first system that we have is the environmental system that we have appeared in. This contains at the least the initial processes to keep us alive. We return to this system later.

THE SOCIAL SYSTEM

The next system is the social system : what are we going to do. We are going to swim, fish, play tennis, live in a house, go to a restaurant, golf, etc. Some of these activities we do everyday or quite regularly. Other activities we do quite irregularly or hardly ever.

If we want to play tennis every few days, then if we live many miles from the tennis court, then we have to get a car and own it., pollute and waste everyday in order to get there. Plus spend the time doing it. However, if that tennis court is only 100 metres down the street then we can just walk there everyday. If the thing we want to do only once every six months is right next door to us, then that takes up space that we can't use for something more appropriate. If , however, this activity we want to do only rarely is twenty miles away from home, then we only have to pollute just once every six months, and only waste time once every six months, to do this activity. Whereas if we did this travelling everyday we would get less enjoyment time per travelling time and pollution.

What I am saying is the things that we want to do quite regularly should be close to us in community. And the things we only want to do now and again can be a long way away from us. This saves time, pollution and resources.
